Toothache El Paso Modern Dentistry Tx 79912Toothaches are extremely common, and quite miserable, with millions of people struggling with them every year. Toothaches can arise from a variety of problems, such as tooth decay, a cracked or broken tooth, or gum disease. However, if your toothache is accompanied by a fever, then that's a sure sign that you may have a dental emergency that requires immediate attention from our office.

The Dangers of a Fever and a Toothache Together

While toothaches are usually quite common, when they arrive with a fever, it means that you could be in danger. A toothache with a fever means that your body is fighting off an infection and, if left untreated, it could become more dangerous and possibly deadly.

Typically an infection arises due to an abscess, which is a pocket of pus that forms in your tooth or on your gums. When periodontal disease (gum disease) remains untreated, this infection is allowed to run rampant.

Please be aware of any of these signs of an infection in your tooth or gums:

•  Swollen cheek
•  Throbbing in your mouth
•  Foul odor on breath
•  A fever
•  Sensitivity to heat, cold, or touch
•  Swollen lymph nodes

An infection in the mouth is especially dangerous, as it can quickly spread to other parts of the body, including the brain.
If we notice an infection, we will start treatment on it right away. We may need to surgically drain the abscess, and we may also start you on a round of antibiotics.

If the tooth is severely damaged, we may advise a root canal to try to save it, but occasionally the tooth will require extraction. If we remove the tooth, we will advise an implant, a bridge, or a partial denture.

An infection can go from uncomfortable to lethal seemingly overnight. If you have a fever and a toothache, do not try to treat it at home by yourself. Instead, give us a call here today for a same-day appointment and let us assess the infection and start prompt treatment for it.
